Do we equate higher education with a place?

Satisficing - users want the best but they can't define what they need. E.g. I want an A, but I don't know what the best is.

Wikipedia v. Encarta -- changed because of a fundamentally different concept.

• People seek to construct the world around them.
• Search boxes on a page do not equal Google.
• Reason Google work is it deals with topology.
• For centuries we've been concentrating on the wrong side of the book.

ALA's Core Competences of Librarianship = What thou shalt know. Doesn't contain the why.

Library of Alexandria - the musee was where things kept, the library was where scholars stayed.

"Recorded knowledge" is an oxymoron. The knowledge resides in the person using an artifact.

Librarians are in the knowledge business.

Mission: To improve socieity through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.
